Mummy went for Music Class hunting. This would be a long term expensive affair if JL decided to go further.
Mummy was from Yamaha…yup, Mummy grew up in Yamaha back in north completing Electone (Organ) from Level 13 till Grade 6. Mummy even joined the Northern Region Electone Competition when Mummy was 11 years old but it was the 1st and last because KongKong didn’t like the idea Mummy skipping school lessons for the practice. Being not born talented in music was a lot of hard work. Mummy enjoyed doing performances both individual and group.
Besides that Mummy took ABRSM Theory from Grade 1-5 (with 4 Distinctions – Mummy also not sure how Mummy made it but it was great hard work).
Mummy didn’t manage to complete the rest because Mummy had to go to Ipoh to further study in polytechnic.
YiYee and SamYee gave up Piano even before they went for Grade 8. SamYee was in JMC course earlier. SamYee then continued playing in the church till now without completing all the ABRSM exams.
Aiks…..Mummy supposed to share about JL’s not Mummy’s….side track…
Back on track…
Mummy went to ask Yamaha about the fees structure etc... because Mummy knew what to expect from the whole course. Everything in Yamaha was very systematic and organized, being such a big and reputable organization. However, weekend classes were full and weekdays nights were the only ones available. Weekdays would be impossible for us because PaPa and Mummy working time were uncertain. JMC course needed one of the parents to be in the class all the time.
Then, SamYee introduced Mummy to her church member who was a singer in the church. She had a music school running program like Musikgarten and for higher level would be ANZCA from Australia plus many other music programmes and other products. She had 3 kids with the eldest one from JMC but the other 2 on non-JMC. Unlike Yamaha, this was a small centre.
So which one should we go for?
PaPa and Mummy discussed. The fees for both were almost the same. Our aim for JL was not to be trained as professional unless he was found to be talented mmmm…. We wanted him to learn music and have fun and fun and fun. Exam and certification was not the important thing. SamYee had no certification but she played in church and she enjoyed it. PaPa also didn’t really have any certification in guitar but he enjoyed playing guitar and learnt by himself.
At last we decided to enroll him to SamYee’s friend’s centre under the course 'Encore On Keys' - Junior Series because Mummy was from Yamaha background and Mummy would love to try something new. We hoped JL would find this class interesting even though it would not be in a big school but a small centre.

Last Saturday 04July09, JL attended his 1st lesson (it will be a 2 years program like JMC). In total, there were 5 kids around his age. Parents were only required to join in the last 15 minutes of the class during recap so that we as parents would know what they learnt for that day. JL said it was fun. For time being, he would practise once in a while in SamYee's apartment.
PaPa and Mummy are hunting for a reasonable price either a keyboard or piano. Any recommendation?

There is bumble bee in puchong, run by my church. of course the teacher is not me cos i got no patience n my students will cry ahahahahaha
if u stay near there, can check it out. otherwise Yamaha is good choice cos i did started out there first before going to private one..(ie: go to the teacher's home on 1-to-1)
littlelamb
prefer to start with group first becauswe if 1 to 1, not sure he will enjoy or not for a start..
Puchong will be a bit far for me...
After 1 lesson, will just go on with this n see how it goes..
Thanks for the tips...
The most important is he enjoy and like the class ... some mummies been introduce some good place for me, but tooo far how to go ?? end up we enroll Jeremy at Bangi .... near my house, no need to worry abt transport and catching the time . As u know my place is very hard to find all kind of kids centre/activities like ur place in PJ ....
let Jeriel try for few more time 1st, then only decide how lor ...
But, sad to say, we might stop the class for 2 months during my confinement .... unless william can find time to accompany Jeremy!!
wow chanel, u r so good with piano & organ ahh!! u kenot teach yr son meh? i think yamaha is good but it's getting too famous & commercialise so ppl tend to fight to get a place....sigh!!
i heard it's good to get boy to learn music...enhance the calmer & softer side of them rather than being too aggressive & hyper!!
anggie's journal
get william to go lar...
jacss
really? I hope this will calm Jeriel..he tends to be impatient and hyper..I pening...
i am considering JMC too but parents need to be there.hmm...
do let us know if ur sis's fren's course is good or not
i wonder if my sis wanna sell off my niece's cos she went for class and she stopped. I check for u. senang also for u to pick up hahaha downstairs upstairs only
The piano teacher is very important. I am switching Emily from Yamaha to another teacher.
Yeah Yamaha classes are very structured but if the teacher is no good, it doesn't help either.
my sista, i did till grade 7 leh...
Later share how it went.
Zara is in JMC. She likes it. and Zaria is also always asking, why she cannot go.
My Jing in Music Garden and Yang in Kindermusic. They enjoy their music class very much. But personnally i prefer Kindermusic. Yang joined it since bb. Both of them not interesting in JMC.
Advice to choose keyboard or piano - Piano coz the key distance and the way pressing the key is different between keyboard and piano. Piano need more energy to press. Different brand of keyboard had different distance of the keys compare to piano. Unless u buy a very good and not the standard type keyboard, it's cost ~RM1k or over 1k. But a second hand Kawai piano only less RM6k but can use very long time.
wen
will see how..n update you ok?
Sasha
thanks for checking for me....
michelle
I have to agree with you ..the most important is the teacher , not the course
cherylW
oppss...sorry sis
Zara's Mama
will do.... it is good that Zara enjoys which means the teacher is doing a good job...
Moo mommy
thanks for the tip...we are looking maybe a keyboard or maybe digital piano so that it will be too bulky in our small apartment.. havent thought where to put in the apartment...pening...
Wei...recently, I just purchase Yamaha keyboard PSR 223(if I remember the code well) under recommendation by Jona music teacher....The sound ok ler..and nowadays, when he is in good mood, he will practise it and now, he seem to get better in playing it with his tiny fingers....outside market sell at RM 710, but, I manage get 20% discount ler...let me know if you interested to buy Yamaha keyboard, this model :P
