Very very interesting topic (tag) by Chinnee about rod/cane.
Using a cane has to be careful because if it is out of control, it will injure the child due to uncontrollable emotion. We only started to introduce cane to Jeriel after he is 3 years old when he understands the reason of cane. However, we do not simple use to cane. Usually we will warn and reasoning with Jeriel so that he know why he was caned. Sometimes, he will ask for another chance before we caned him.
PaPa reads a lot of Dr James Dobson’s books about disciplining a child (still reading). PaPa said that a hand is to love a child not to beat a child, so that’s why PaPa does not use his hands to beat Jeriel. PaPa also learnt that it is not wise to use other things like ruler, cooking ladle and others to replace the cane because it is not meant for caning. Caning is only allowed on the buttock, not on hands or other part of the body.
Cane is always the last resort. We avoid using cane by starting to talk to him and Jeriel learn to give his reason and negotiate with us. Jeriel knows that if he disobeys, the cane will be last resort we used. When Jeriel gets a cane, he will not dare to cry (some tears in his eyes) because he knows that he is being warned and it is his fault that he continues to disobey. Whenever any one of us disciplines Jeriel, we are not allowed to go against it which will spoil all the purpose of discipline. So, when PaPa disciplines Jeriel, Jeriel knows that Mummy cannot help him, so vice versa.
