Combined Dept Teambuilding in Pelangi Resort, Langkawi (Part 1—9 Aug 2006, Wednesday)

I was in Langkawi from 9-11 Aug 2006 for teambuilding which is a combination of 2 departments. This is our 2nd time having the combined teambuilding with the same team. Last year, we went to Tanjung Jara, Terengganu.

My flight was 8.30am on 9 Aug 2006. The night before, was in 1Utama buying some last minute item. By the time we went home, Jeriel refused to sleep until quite late. I was almost late but thank goodness, the taxi driver who is Othniel regular taxi driver called me. Good thing, I had already packed my bags and got my clothes ready. I woke up and rushed to get ready.

I was chit chatting with the taxi driver while on the way to KLIA. Once arrive there, check-in and went for breakfast in McDonald with 5 other colleagues who were in the same flight. Another group will be taking 11am flight.

I was so tired that I slept in the airplane. I didn't even bother to take any usual juice offered by the air stewardess.

We reached Langkawi airport at about 9.30am but manage to leave only close to 10am because it took some time for our check-in luggage to come out.

Two of our colleagues had to go to Pelangi Resort with our entire luggage because they were in-charge for this team building. The remaining four of us decided to get a taxi to Kuah town for shopping and 'jalan-jalan' since we will not have much time to travel out from the hotel. Besides that, we were still early as the indoor teambuilding will only start with lunch at 12.30pm in the hotel.

Each of us start to help each other to find our things and we walked almost all the shops to see which shop had the things we wanted and the cheapest.

After shopping, we took a taxi back to hotel. As usual check-in and sat down in lobby enjoying the welcome drink while waiting for lunch to be ready. Lunch was Western Set. After heavy lunch, we adjourned to a Meeting Room for ½ day indoor Teambuilding.

For a start, 2 of our colleagues (let me name them Mr A and Mr B) started to give welcoming speech. Then Mr A started to go around and ask us to take as many Lot100 sweets we wanted for the whole meeting. Some were greedy by taking a lot. Oh oh, there was a trick. Now, Mr A then announced to us the 1st game was to tell everyone a few interesting things about ourselves. How many? It was based on how many sweets each of us had taken. I took 6 and one of them took 13. It was an interesting session and we got to know a lot of hidden interesting things of our team.

Next, we were given real life case study. We need to work individually and then discuss as a group. After that, our Directors (2 Department), would decide which person in the team to present spontaneously. We need to identify:

• What went well?
• What went wrong?
• If given chance to repeat, how to overcome the things which went wrong.

There were 3 groups. My group was No 2 and I was chosen to present for my group. It was a long debate and discussion. At the end, we summarized all and learnt from 'What went wrong?'. After this teambuilding, we were supposed to email the following for compilation :

• A "Apple" is something done by a person you work with which makes you frustrated or annoyed; e.g. always coming late for meetings

• A "Mango" is something done by a person you work with which helps you work better; e.g. setting clear objectives at the beginning of the project

We need to identify 4 each.

Tiring mind for us even though it was only ½ day. Then we proceeded back to our room and dinner was BBQ Seafood.

At night, we 'lepak' in one of the girls' room – chit chatting and some was drinking Chivas. The main topic of the night ended up to be "Experience in the Labor Room". All the unmarried girls and those married with not kids found very interesting.
